Hospitals and health systems face significant financial burdens driven by the fundamental equation of profit. They must navigate a challenging landscape marked by suppressed reimbursements. Learn more in The 2024 Hospital Focus: Navigating Five Major Healthcare Trends white paper.

Key Takeaways:

  • Hospitals operate on a basic equation: profit (or sustainability) = revenue – cost.
  • For nonprofit systems, the goal isn’t large margins but covering necessary costs to sustain care delivery.
  • Revenue is driven by volume of patients and reimbursement rates, both of which are being challenged.
  • Reimbursement suppression is placing significant strain on hospitals and providers.
  • Without adequate revenue, health systems struggle to deliver their mission and maintain care access.

:00-1:05    There’s a lot going on that’s impacting the financial burdens of hospitals and health systems and provider groups today. If you think about it, it’s a very simple equation in how any organization makes money or delivers their mission. Profit is revenue minus cost. Many health systems are not for profit. What that means is, they don’t need to have a huge margin, but you have a cost structure you have to cover in order to be able to sustainably deliver care. That revenue is based on price times volume. How many patients you’re seeing and what you get reimbursed for that patient care. There is a pretty serious suppression in reimbursements to hospitals and providers right now.
