The nursing workforce, particularly in perioperative services, is facing a shortage due to a variety of factors such as an aging workforce, lower enrollment in nursing programs, and a lack of work-life balance for nurses. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the shortage by increasing workload and disrupting nursing staff. Strategies for improving retention include a good bonus structure and dedicated preceptors during the orientation process, a positive work culture, and using data and analytics to predict and improve scheduling. By addressing these issues and improving retention, hospitals and health systems can mitigate the nursing shortage.
