Sunny Eappen's Biography

Dr. Sunny Eappen currently serves as the President and CEO of The University of Vermont Health Network, where he oversees 6 hospitals including The University of Vermont Medical Center, 5 community hospitals, the Home Health and Hospice resource, a pediatric hospital and a Cancer Center with over 1600 beds covering a million patients in Vermont and Northern New York state. He previously served as the Interim President and the Chief Medical Officer at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He previously served as Chief of Anesthesiology and CMO at the Mass Eye and Ear, and Board member at the BWH and CRICO.

Dr. Eappen earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, his MD from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine and his MBA from the Yale University School of Management. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Eappen has numerous published articles and is a national speaker on the utility of surgical checklist implementation in order to reduce surgical complications, optimizing OR efficiency, and change management. In addition to serving as CEO, Eappen is also Clinical Professor of Anesthesia at University of Vermont Larner School of Medicine.
